Dr. Juniper Kadera

Jaivan grew up surrounded by poverty. At a young age, he would go to work with his parents - first because they couldn't afford childcare, then so he could start earning money as well. All the while, he saw just how desolate his community had become. Teachers tried to encourage students to attend classes, but they usually gave up after a few weeks. Who disease didn't kill, starvation did. Many parents sold their children for food, or gave them away to strangers who had promised a better life for them; a life of education, full bellies, clothes to wear, and roofs over their heads. Of course, this was all far, far too good to be true...
At eight years old, Jaivan came home to find his parents speaking with a strange man and woman. Naivety convinced him there was no need to worry. His parents loved him! Whenever a playmate stopped coming over, his parents would promise him, over and over, that they would never allow anyone to separate them. But... his mother's belly had grown unusually large over the past few months, and both of his parents had seemed preoccupied lately. He went to bed that night in his own home, relieved that his suspicions weren't true. His parents were more attentive than usual, though. Telling stories and spending every moment with him until he fell asleep. The following morning, the man and woman came back. Both were clean, smiling, and well-dressed. The woman had a gift for him, a bag of traveler's clothes, a pair of shoes, and a toy bear. Then his parents broke the news. He was going away with this couple to the capital city, where he would have opportunities he had never dreamed of before. Not to worry, though! They would bring him home for visits when time allowed it. His departure was tearful, but he obeyed like the good little boy he always tried to be, and he never saw his parents again.
The couple treated him well for the first few days; buying him treats and taking him to play with other children. They told him that from now on he would go by Juniper instead of Jaivan. At each stop, another child would join them, sometimes more than one, until they reached the capital city. There was no house, though. No school. Instead, they were taken to a great, ramshackle building in the dead of night. Inside, there was constant movement. It seemed as if people left as soon as they arrived, taking one or more children with them. Upon their arrival, the couple's kind facade dropped. Juniper and his parents had fallen victim to a human trafficking ring.
He was traded and passed between groups for months until, by some miracle, he was sent to work as a laborer. He had heard the other children speaking about what horrors they had experienced, and he considered himself lucky. Left with no choice, he worked. All the while, he set a string of goals for himself.

Still under construction but, long story short, he escaped captivity thanks to a police raid and ended up in a home for children. Here, he displayed a remarkable intellect, and the volunteers for the children's home helped him apply for sponsors to fund his schooling. It wasn't long before he exceeded the highest grade level they had to offer. Having nothing for sponsors to fund, he worked toward that goal himself. Working back-to-back shifts and saving every coin he came across, he finally managed to earn enough to fund his first semester at the small, local college. So small that there was no age requirement. He passed every course with flying colors. His success caught the attention of the headmaster, who - with great trouble - organized a scholarship to any nearby school of Juniper's choice. Juniper's answer was immediate. Medical school. He would go on to earn a PhD in Public Health at the age of 25, and a second PhD in Health Systems at the age of 30.

Now a successful man with the world at his fingertips, what on earth would he do with himself now?
